Companies’ Responsibilities to Employees’ Health

Most BPO companies are seen to have higher health risks among its employees. This claim is supported by the working schedules and physical workplace of such companies. With regards to the working schedules, it is already expected that if you work for a BPO company, which is apparently dealing with foreign clients, you would have to be very flexible with the working schedule. Such decision is not too tough to make for most applicants because BPO companies are compensating this well. In terms of physical set-up, employees would apparently be surrounded by electronic gadgets which emit a lot of radiations. All these are enough to put the health conditions of the employees at risk.

It is the employer’s responsibility to protect their employee from such risks, because they are the ones that keep the company operating. An ideal and responsible company would:

1. Offer various health benefits – aside from the regular health benefits of the employees from any other company, BPO Companies should also invest on other health insurances like hospital rooms, medical fees, etc. This will assure the virtual employees that the company has their back in cases when their body fails.

2. Offer sanitary facilities – some diseases are simply acquired from the surroundings, and to avoid employees from acquiring such, a company should pay attention to the sanitation of every corner of the office, but most importantly on their comfort rooms, pantries, and cafeteria.

3. Offer health food 24/7 – given the work schedule of the BPO employees, the company should take the initiative to make healthy (yet heavy) food accessible for all employees, even those who are working on graveyard shift.

4. Offer free medicines in the workplace premises – a simple headache can already terribly affect an employees work performance, thus it would be more strategic for a company to make the generic medicines readily available for the virtual staff. These medicines generally do not cost too much, but the relief that they can offer will already go a long way.

5. Offer nap time – any research study would agree that power naps are effective and necessary, and it becomes more necessary for virtual staff who are using their eyes intensely for long periods of time. As long as proper regulations are observed, 5-10 minute naps need not hurt the productivity of the virtual staff and BPO company .
